English Sterling Silver Capstan Ink Well ~ Fully Hallmarked for Birmingham 1933 with lion passant for Sterling Silver and anchor mark for Birmingham assay ~ This is one of the nicest capstan ink wells I have seen for a while - very heavy with loaded base - and a large and elegant shape make this a very majestic piece for your office or study desk. This is top quality with gilded interior to the flip lid - have a look at the workmanship of the hinge in the images below. Fully hallmarked with repeat marks to the lip and the flip lid - also makers mark T&S. Comes with the original fitted case with black velvet and silk lining - retailers label is intact and on the silk lining of the case lid and glass liner. Condition is very good - usual small scratches etc but no dents or significant marks. The glass liner is probably a replacement - it fits and is usable but is slightly smaller than the original would have been. The case is 6 5/8" square and 3 1/2" tall. The ink well is 4 1/2" diameter and 3" high. |

Old
Sheffield plate 5 3/4" diameter, 4" high Sheffield Plate
is a fusion of silver foil onto thin sheets of copper which is then
worked into the article. The process was invented by Thomas Boulsover in
1742 and enabled beautiful items to be made at less cost than solid
silver. Sheffield Plate lends itself particularly well to repousse
work. Candle sticks, Chamber Sticks, Tea Urns, Ink Stands, Meat
Covers, Trays are all found in Sheffield Plate, never items like cutlery.
The interiors of all items to be used with food or drink will be
'tinned' inside, copper being unsuitable for use with foodstuffs, and
the bottoms of items with flat surfaces that can expect wear, like
Chamber Sticks will also be 'tinned'. This is a good indication that
the item is genuine Sheffield Plate and not the later electro plate. They
are subject to wear through the process of use and particularly cleaning,
and where the wear is relatively light the copper shows through on the
leading or 'proud' edges, this gives a very subtle golden glow to the article.
Often on large items like meat covers and trays, a great deal of loss is
found on the large flat areas. Cleaning should only be with silver cleaner
never copper cleaner. We always use a foaming silver polish which is
very light. Never rub hard when cleaning. The process of Sheffield Plating
lapsed during the middle of the 19th century with the growing use of
commercial electro plating. |

GEORGIAN STERLING SILVER ~~ TEA POT AND STAND ~~ PETER AND ANN BATEMAN, LONDON 1798 Beautiful full size tea pot of classic Adam design. Oval half-lobed form, with straight tapering spout, domed hinged lid with 'mushroom' finial and fruitwood handle. It's original stand has reeded rim and four reeded feet. Both carry armorial crest, see pictures. Condition is excellent. This pot and stand, straight from a Gentleman's estate sale, were continually used.....for afternoon tea! The inside of the pot is tea stained, this can be easily cleaned, but tea is better from a 'seasoned' pot. Fruitwood handle is nice and tight, lid hinge is just a very little wobbly. Spout tip is a little off round, see picture. Nice patina commensurate with having been used and cleaned for over 200 years. Interestingly you can feel with the finger tips where the shape was worked or hammered into the desired shape. Stand is perfect. Both pieces fully Hallmarked of course with Lion Passant for Sterling silver, Leopards Head for London Assay, Makers Mark for Peter and Ann Bateman, Kings head Duty Mark and Date Mark for 1798. Tea Pot Lid is also Hallmarked. STUNNING ADDITION TO YOUR COLLECTION **I have been told that the Heraldic Arms, within the shield on one side of the tea pot and crest or device, on the other side of the pot and on the tea pot stand, are of EDIE, MONEAGHT SCOTLAND. Tea Pot Height 7 inch x Width 11 1/2 inch handle to spout. Stand Width 6 1/2 inch. Capacity about 2 pints. Gross weight 22oz. What an elegant treat to take Tea with these foremost and very collectable makers!
